  7. TELEPHONE HOTLINES.  The SBA and several other government
  8. agencies maintain toll-free telephone "hotline" information
  9. services to assist businesses and taxpayers.  Some of the
  10. more important ones to know about are the following:

  12.     . SBA Answer Desk: 1-800/827-5722 (or 1-800-UASK-SBA)

  14.       This is the toll-free number of a new small business
  15.       information and referral service offered by the SBA,
  16.       which you can call from anywhere in the continental
  17.       United States, except Washington, D.C.  In the
  18.       District of Columbia, call 653-7561.

  20.       This telephone Answer Desk is staffed from 8:30 a.m.
  21.       to 6:00 p.m. Eastern time by experts from the SBA's
  22.       Office of Advocacy, who will handle your questions
  23.       regarding problems connected with your firm and the
  24.       government.  (The persons on this Answer Desk have
  25.       advised the author of this program that they have on
  26.       hand a complete set of the STARTING & OPERATING A
  27.       BUSINESS IN ...(STATE)... series of books (also by
  28.       this author) for all 50 states and D.C., which they
  29.       use as a reference for fielding incoming questions.)

  33.       This toll-free line is a specialized free service
  34.       offered by the Export-Import Bank to small exporters
  35.       needing general information or problem-solving assis-
  36.       tance relating to doing business abroad.  It provides
  37.       information on export credit and on assistance avail-
  38.       able from other government agencies and the private
  39.       sector.

  41.     . Interagency Trade Information Center:  1-800/USA-TRADE

  43.       (For general information on exporting, provided by
  44.       various U.S. government agencies.)  Or, for informa-
  45.       tion on doing business in the "unified" European
  46.       Market after 1992, call for written information and
  47.       a quarterly newsletter, from the Department of
  48.       Commerce's Single Internal Market:  1992 Information
  49.       Service, at 1-202/377-5276.  Or call the European
  50.       Community Center's Washington, D.C. office, at
  51.       1-202/862-9500.

  53.       NOTE:  For information on taxes and other aspects of
  54.       doing business in various foreign countries, the ac-
  55.       counting firm of Ernst & Young publishes a series of
  56.       booklets for each of a large number of countries.

  66.       Like certain Scandinavian countries, the Environmen-
  67.       tal Protection Agency now has a "Small Business
  68.       Ombudsman" to give easier access to the EPA, help
  69.       you comply with EPA regulations, and make sure you
  70.       are fairly treated in any disputes with the EPA.

  76.       forms, publications, etc.  The IRS also puts on free

  86.       If you want to find out what records the Social
  87.       Security Administration (SSA) has of your earnings
  88.       and your projected benefits at retirement age, you
  89.       can file a simple form requesting a detailed print-
  90.       out of this information (and hopefully find they
  91.       haven't lost your files).  This is something every-
  92.       one should do once every few years, since, if the
  93.       SSA has made a serious mistake in your earnings
  94.       record, you have only a limited number of years in
  95.       which you can contact them and have your record
  96.       corrected.
